IoT Device Engineer

Overview

Conservation Labs is a team of mathematicians and engineers with a mission to improve the planet for future generations. Our first product, H2know, addresses a $100 billion problem by enabling cost effective and sustainable water use. We invented and patented a way to classify and quantify any sound with a simple microphone and machine learning. Water is our first use case.

For water, our non-invasive IoT sensor fits over a pipe to measure and classify usage every second. H2know helps reduce water use by providing comprehensive water insights and custom conservation recommendations; it provides peace of mind by identifying the risk factors that lead to leaks as well as alerting the user of catastrophic leaks. Beyond water, our proprietary machine learning technology is being used to accurately assess and predict failure in machines and equipment down to the sub-system. This product is called Gyver.

Job Description

We’re looking for an extraordinary IoT Device Engineer to join our team. You will be leading the efforts to develop the next version of our H2know sensor. The successful candidate will have ninja skills in implementing mesh networks, wired and wireless communication protocols (e.g. Power over Ethernet, Wi-Fi), hands-on build and testing, and data minimization techniques to meet evolving requirements.

Requirements

Conservation Labs is an A Stage startup. We are tirelessly persistent and expect the same of all team members. We believe we can make a positive difference in people’s lives, our customer’s profitability, and the environment. We are seeking someone who is like-minded, passionate, and works with disciplined obsession. We are looking for someone with the following skills and experience:

  • This is a full-time W-2 position; we will not consider applicants for 1099 contract work
  • U.S. based, 100% remote position
  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status required
  • Independent/self-guided, and proven success working on a fully remote and interdisciplinary team; flexibility with hours is important as most team members are on Eastern Time or Central Time
  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in electronic design and embedded systems and 5+ years of embedded C/C++ experience
  • Experience with implementing and modifying a mesh networking stack in an IoT device
  • System design experience, including analog and digital signals, DSP, real-time implementation, user interface implementation, integration, and debugging
  • Experience with a range of ethernet and wireless communication protocols with an understanding of tradeoffs and design issues
  • Strong understanding of software architecture and design in embedded software development
  • Experience and point of view with designing and managing tradeoffs between important IoT features such as cost, performance, and edge-to-cloud processing and operations
  • Good problem solving ability and analytical skills to solve problems efficiently
  • Embedded hardware interfaces including UART, I2C, AND SPI and communications
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain software, including fixing bugs and testing for usability, using source code control (Github) and CI pipelines
  • Proven success collaborating with product, program, marketing, and engineering to define and implement innovative solutions

In addition, there are specific and desired skills in our technology stack:

  • ESP32 (ESP32-WROVER preferred)
  • RTOS / FreeRTOS
  • Over the Air (OTA) updates from cloud (AWS)
  • AWS IoT
  • MQTT
  • HTTP, HTTPS
  • USB
  • Wi-Fi and Mesh networks
  • CMake
  • Python
  • LoRaWAN
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE)

Measures of Success
